Bettystown Tidy Towns has planted two mini-forests opposite each other along Tara Road. The one on the west side, called the Stepping Stone Forest, was sponsored by AWS. Both forests feature a mixture of Blackthorn, Whitethorn, Hazel, Oak, Elder, and Rosa rugosa.

Miyawaki forest planting process
The project follows the Miyawaki forest planting process. It is a dense, fast-growing, and highly biodiverse native forest created using a method developed by Japanese botanist Dr Akira Miyawaki. It entails the following:
3–5 native saplings are planted per square metre;
the soil is improved before planting to support rapid growth;
these forests can grow up to 10 times faster than conventional forests;
they are up to 30 times denser than traditional plantations;
Miyawaki forests become self-sustaining within 2–3 years;
their compact size and rapid growth make them ideal for urban areas.
